From 1st January 2020, all septic tanks that discharge into a watercourse or ditch in England and Wales will need to be replaced. If your septic tank has not been replaced then you potentially could be liable to pay sizable fine by the Environment Agency up to £100,000.

If you bought a property from 1st January 2015 which is serviced by a septic tank and your Solicitor/Conveyancer did not advise you whether it complied with the General Binding Rules then you could be entitled to compensation for a claim of professional negligence.
